I have been praying about how to serve in our community. I want to do something to contribute. And I want to involve my kids in some way. We choose to home school our kids, so that gives us a perfect opportunity to reach outside of ourselves to serve others. This question has been on my mind so much lately. But, I don't really know what to do. Every day still feels a little bit like survival mode, so I don't think I can do anything too time-consuming at this point in my life. But I have this inner desire to do something that makes a difference. Don't get me wrong, I know that motherhood is the best way of doing something that will make a difference, but I want to contribute in another way to, and give my kids the opportunity to do so also. Well, the other day I had one little idea. Usually we try to do some kind of service as a family about once a month. And I thought, maybe we can use that service day to learn about a non-profit organization and then do something for them...make a donation, write thank you notes to the employees, or whatever their organization needs at the moment. So we had our first Organization of the Month night last week.
This month we learned all about Vogel Alcove. This amazing organization helps serve children whose families are going through periods of homelessness or unemployment. They provide meals, clothing, necessities, education. They have school classes, a safe playground, and employment services for parents. They provide daily care for children ages six weeks to 12 years. Each family has a social worker to help them get on their feet during difficult times. Super cool organization!
We were excited to learn about this special place that serves some of the nearly 3,000 homeless children in Dallas. They are always in need of donations, such as diapers, wipes, clothing, cleaning supplies, and financial help. One cool way to get involved with them is to make Bye Bye bags, which are basically snack bags they send with the kids each day to make sure they have enough to eat in the evening.
Here's their link if you want to check them out too! I'll post about other organizations we love to support each month!
