How I Homeschool

With so many families wanting to start homeschool because of the COVID pandemic, I wanted to add my thoughts to the many other resources available. Whenever someone asks about what curriculum I use, or what resources we use, I often tell them that the most important part of homeschool is prayer. No one else knows your children like Heavenly Father does. No one else loves them as He does. And He will help you know what YOUR children need. Every child, every family, every parent is different. There is no one curriculum that will work perfectly for every child. And that is the beauty of homeschool! I love that I can focus my efforts on my kids' individual strengths, interests, and passions. I can push them more in areas in which they excel and love, and carefully guide them through those topics that they don't enjoy or struggle with. We teach to their strengths, as it is in those areas that their ultimate life's mission will be fulfilled. I do a mixture of formal learning...

Math Hate

One of my littles hates math. Hates it! So mostly we play math games to help her understand how math works, and see some real application. Yesterday we had a math morning for school. We learned about parabolas, and creating parabolas out of right, acute, and obtuse angles. The kids drew 7 inch lines, with a number at each inch or half inch on both lines. Then they connected the number 1's, nunber 2's and so on until they had beautiful parabolas. Next, we played The Doorbell Rang with several small people toys acting as the friends in the story and some cereal as the cookies. We read the book and acted out giving each child cookies, talking about how division works as the story progressed. Understanding how division worked definitely helped my girl. Last, we talked about fractions by making playdough pies, and then dividing those pies into a certain number of pieces. We even took that so far as to talk about reducing fractions. Field Day

Because of COVID-19, we have had to get creative with our field trips. We used to love going out once a week to a museum, park, zoo, spray park, or other adventure, and often with friends. But those experiences have now ceased (at least for the time). So now our field trips are actually field trips to some park with a large field where we can run around, experience nature, kick a ball, etc. One morning, I got semi-creative and planned a Field Day for our school outing. Some of the highlights of the day included: Kicking a soccer ball around tree obstacles Carrying an apple between your knees to a designated finish line Carrying a button on a spoon without dropping the button Spinning around with your head on a bat then walking in a straight line Hide and go seek with a small toy The great frisbee throw Baseball toss ....and several others.
